Melmaryn - East Riding of Yorkshire

The Mel Maryns is a quaint fishing village nestled in the breathtaking countryside of Cumbria. Melmary is the traditional fishing village and most visitors come here to fish. There is an indoor market on Wednesdays where you can buy fresh fish, bread and cheese. This is a village that is very popular with tourists because the atmosphere is very picturesque and idyllic. There are many beautiful gardens dotted around the village which provide a great insight into the way life used to be in this lovely area.

The original spelling of Melmaryn was Minnetonka (meaning 'on the lake'), but this name was changed in the 18th century. A local scholar who lived in the area suggested the name was corrupted from 'minnows'. This is why some people refer to the village as a 'fishyard' - because fishing brought in a large variety of aquatic life. Today the village is known for it's cod fishing.

Melmaryn is a very popular holiday cottage in East Riding of Yorkshire. Most visitors book the cottage holiday during May to September. During this period the village offers a wide range of events such as a traditional bonfire display, traditional poetry reading, bonfire night and traditional music and dancing. People like to take part in lots of traditional activities during their holiday break. The bonfire night is especially popular because many people light bonfires on this evening for roasting marshmallows.

Melmaryn is also a very popular place for hikers and cyclists. It is a beautiful and quiet place that has lovely paths leading in every direction. It is possible to cycle to the summit of Mt. Eskel. But be careful, as the path is very steep!

Another great thing about Melmaryn is that it has two nature reserves within it. It is possible to go on guided tours of both the reserves. These reserves have been set up to help wildlife and people alike. Both of the reserves have a lot to offer; hiking, bird watching, horse riding, etc. There is a lot for the person who likes to do something different.

Melmaryn is a quaint little village. Most people live in a cottage. They have a local pub and there are many small shops in the village. It is possible to see why Melmaryn is so special. Its relaxing atmosphere and local attractions make it a very nice place to visit. Anyone who wants a peaceful holiday that is relatively quiet and not packed with tourists will want to try Melmaryn.
