What is a "Diet"?

In many cases, the definition of a "diet" is also defined by a definition of what constitutes a "weight loss plan". In public discourse, an individual's diet is usually described as a formalized plan that aims to reduce consumption of any particular food group. As a general rule, this includes restricting the number of calories that an individual should consume in order to maintain a healthy body weight. In a political context, a diet is also a formalized deliberative meeting, usually consisting of a group of elected representatives who discuss issues pertaining to the state or the nation. In the United States, the National Diet Association (NDA) is an organization which is responsible for creating the official definition of a "diet". The NDA defines a diet as an informal group of people who meet together periodically to discuss and debate matters of public importance related to the consumption of food.

In recent years, various different groups and communities have developed definitions of what constitutes a "diet." For instance, the American Heart Association has published several publications on its website that outline the types of diets that can be classified as "diet." The American Dietetic Association also publishes many publications to describe the different types of diets that are used as part of a specific diet regimen.

In contrast, the general public definition of a "diet" typically refers to the list of foods that an individual for the purpose of losing weight. A person may not follow a prescribed diet, but most often, the diet requires the consumption of specific foods in a specific amount in order to achieve the desired weight loss. In the United States, the Food Pyramid illustrates the typical amount of each food group that is required to achieve a particular level of nutrition on a daily basis. According to the Food Pyramid, the recommended daily servings of calories include between two hundred twenty-five hundred for women, one hundred and sixty for men, and two hundred for children and teens. In this example, the amount of calories that an individual should ingest is based on gender, age, height, and overall health status.

When it comes to implementing these plans, however, some individuals must exercise in order to shed unwanted pounds. Some individuals choose to take up a new hobby and engage in regular physical activity in order to remain in good health. Some individuals decide to participate in a structured weight loss regimen, while others choose to engage in a more traditional form of dieting through diet supplements and regular exercise.
